Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, accompanied by The Prince of Wales, leaves Buckingham Palace in a 1902 State Road Landau en route to St Paul's Cathedral for a Service of Thanksgiving to celebrate her 80th birthday, July 1980. Services of Thanksgiving are held from time to time to commemorate special events and occasions. They may be held to celebrate an event of national importance or which relates to an organisation linked to the Royal Family. Services may also be held to mark personal milestones such as a wedding anniversary or to commemorate the life of a prominent person. Services of Thanksgiving are usually held in notable churches, cathedrals and abbeys in London and around the country. © Press Association
